Mealworms are the larvae of the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor) and are among the most popular feeder insects in terrariums. They are readily accepted by many insectivorous reptiles, amphibians, birds, and small animals. Contrary to popular myths, mealworms are not excessively fatty, but rather rich in high-quality protein.

In animals that eat very quickly, digestive problems can occasionally occur if the chitinous exoskeleton is not chewed sufficiently. Therefore, a tailored feeding regime is recommended.

Mealworms can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks with minimal loss of nutritional value.

Besides being used as feeder insects, mealworms are also a proven fishing bait. They are inexpensive and particularly popular with fish species such as trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, or grayling – especially in trout lakes.
