Springtails ( Collembola ) are tiny, ground-dwelling primitive insects and an indispensable component of modern bioactive terrariums. They are used both as feeder animals for very small reptiles, amphibians, poison dart frogs, and invertebrates, and as a natural cleaning crew in the terrarium.
By feeding on mold, leftover food, and organic material, springtails actively contribute to improving hygiene and the microclimate in the terrarium. At the same time, they serve as a constantly available micro-food source, especially for juveniles and the smallest species.
Thanks to their characteristic jumping mechanism, springtails are very agile and stimulate the natural hunting instinct even in less active animals. Under suitable conditions, they reproduce quickly and stabilize themselves independently in humid terrariums, paludariums, and rainforest aquariums.
